Each year the university greets 3,000 international students and more than 400 joined the party at the Jurys Inn Waterfront Hotel and on Brighton beach. They are from countries including Vietnam, Iran and Nigeria.

More than 30 staff volunteers and 30 student ambassadors were on hand to answer questions on university life, city culture, and local entertainment.

The welcome was led by Professor Andrew Lloyd, Chair of the International Planning Group; Ian Carter, Student Services Manager and representatives from the Students' Union.

International students arriving in the UK are met by university staff at Heathrow and Gatwick airports and at Brighton railway station before being bought tickets and put on trains to Moulsecoomb, adjoining the university campus. They are provided with accommodation for orientation week while they adjust to the time zone and environment and they receive advice and support on bank accounts, doctors, mobile phones, and wifi. 

Liz Vassilakes, Events Officer, said: “The party was a great success – the students were very keen to learn local ways including how to pronounce ‘scone’ and what should be put on them first, jam or clotted cream.”
