Ellen Mulcrone’s “Tensegrity”, a sculptural dome made from upcycled materials, came out tops from 87 entries from countries around the globe.
The ‘Disrupt Black Friday’ contest was launched by Greenpeace and the digital creative platform Arts Thread to persuade people to avoid the “annual consumption madness” and to lead more sustainable and creative lives.
Organisers said: “Through creativity, community and an unbeatable maker spirit we can change the world and stop over-consumption.”
Artist duo Guerra de la Paz and Sass Brown, Founding Dean of the Dubai Institute of Design and Innovation, joined Greenpeace and Arts Thread for the judging, and the dome will be featured in an exhibition in the Millerntor Stadium in Hamburg, Germany, this weekend.
Ellen, who was awarded a BA(Hons) degree in 3D Design and Craft in 2015, said: “Too often design and creativity are used to simply craft objects of aesthetic beauty. Why not use these skills to inspire and educate on urgent current topics such as the western over-consumption of just about everything?
