Laura Clancy, who graduated in 3D Crafts and Design, created the reverse side of a new £5 limited edition coin honouring 150 years of the Salvation Army.

A Royal Mint spokesperson said: “This is the first Salvation Army coin created by an official mint. The coin and its design have been tremendously well received across the world from members of The Salvation Army, and within two weeks of the coin going on sale in various editions, its popularity has far exceeded expectations.”

Laura said she felt honoured to work on the design: “It is very special to work on a project that commemorates such an organisation. I remember on wintry days, the Salvation Army tunes warming up the cold and gently letting everyone around know that they are there. I wanted to create a design that commemorates their achievements. Something classic, celebratory and with something we all know and recognise at the heart of it."

Laura, a 37-year-old Royal Mint Designer and Engraver, said her university course helped her career: “I learned about materials and craft techniques, and about design processes, and in my work I draw from this background every day.”

Laura said the Royal Mint was inspiring to work for: “It is great to have a job that combines drawing, design ideas, sculpturing techniques and metal work skills.

Laura’s Salvation Army coin is being released in two forms, a cupro-nickel version (similar metal content to all silver-coloured UK coins) and a limited-edition sterling silver version. The coins are available to purchase direct from the Royal Mint and will also be for sale at The Salvation Army's Salvationist Publishing & Supplies Shop at its international congress in July.
