Development of the PBL directory as a research tool

Research into Problem Based Learning (PBL) internationally is often reduced in quality because there is insufficient information about how the programme is actually carried out. Indeed, there is little known overall about how PBL is implemented in all its varieties around the world. To this end we have constructed a PBL Directory, which has recently been reconstructed as a searchable database of PBL courses in all subjects internationally.

The aim of the directory is to record the characteristics of programmes such as the level of course (Bachelors, Masters), numbers of modules studied at any one time (in a fully PBL programme all subjects are integrated into one module at a time) the size of tutorial groups, types of assessments, etc. Programme leaders are invited to submit information via a questionnaire, to build a typology of the way PBL is used within the various subjects. It also considers the professions in which PBL is used, in which institutions and countries, and looks at tutorial processes, course organisation, and staff development in PBL programmes.

Project aims

The aims of the project was

  • To build the PBL Directory as a research tool to enable better definition of how PBL is implemented throughout the world.
  • To invite programme leaders around the world to populate all the sections of the directory.
  • To undertake and publish descriptive statistics regarding the way PBL is played out internationally. This involves many aspects, such as the variety of ways in which tutors are prepared, the common forms of assessment in PBL, different course designs.
  • To undertake targeted qualitative and quantitate research in all the various aspects of PBL, with students and staff of particular courses being invited to participate. For example, we will target courses with large and small tutorial groups to study the effects of tutorial group size on learning experience and outcomes.
  • To invite course leaders of programmes featured in the Directory to become research partners in studies of mutual interest, including within particular professions, such as PBL engineering programmes.

Project impact

The directory has the potential to become a major research tool within PBL pedagogy globally.

Output

These will follow the populating of the Directory with programme details. Other scholars around the world can then use the Directory as a research tool for their particular needs as it will be an open-access tool.
