EUMAHP - European Masters in Health Promotion Programme

The European Masters in Health Promotion Studies (EUMAHP I and II) was funded by the European Commission as part of a programme to improve public health and health promotion training in the European Union. Phase 1 of the EUMAHP project (funded from 1998-2000), demonstrated that there was interest, capacity and commitment across Europe in development a European Masters Programme in Health Promotion. It also established a flexible training framework for the Masters Programme, based on an agreed core curriculum and European quality and accreditation procedures, together with a practical delivery infra-structure to implement the Programme.

Phase 2 of the project (EUMAHP II), funded by the EC from 2001-2004, aimed to implement the European Masters in Health Promotion Programme (EUMAHP) throughout Member States in order to improve the quality of professional education and training of health promoters and gain optimum benefit from its European added-value.

Project aims

The overall aim of the project is to improve the quality of health promotion through the professional training of health promoters in Europe and to benefit from the value-added aspect of the European Dimension.

Project impact

The impact of the EUMAHP projects at European level have been significant influencing the foundation of development of master’s programmes throughout European Member States. Today EUMAHP continues to influence the way students of health promotion are trained with many Universities still basing their programmes on the EUMAHP framework. Moreover, the EUMAHP studies have kick-started a number of other initiatives including the PHETICE, CEIHPAL, and EURODOC projects to continue the development of European and international health promotion training, capacity building, and professional health promotion competency development.
