Trans-Atlantic Exchange Partnerships: Health Promotion International

This project was jointly funded for three years from 2008-2011 by the European Commission's Educational Audiovisual and Culture Executive Agency (EC-EACEA) and by the Ministry of Human Resources and Skills Development (HRSD) in Canada.

The project aimed to create sustainable global resources for advanced study in health promotion, particularly regarding student exchange and curriculum development. Building on the partnerships and outcomes that were achieved through the CEIPHAL project (Canadian-European Initiative for Health Promotion Advanced Learning) from 2005-2008, the TEP Consortium comprised academics from four universities: Brighton and Magdeburg in Europe, and Toronto and Victoria in Canada.

Project aims

Together, the TEP consortium pursued the following objectives:

To create sustainable resources for advanced study and leadership in health promotion;
To provide opportunities for up to 40 advanced-level health promotion students to exchange across the Atlantic;
To promote health promotion faculty and health promotion expert exchange;
To develop two Master level modules (Global Health Promotion, and Participatory Research Methods in Health Promotion) towards an international core curriculum;
To enhance campus-community partnerships in health promotion training and education; and
To explore expansion of the developing international core curriculum in health promotion to universities in Latin-America and Africa.

Project impact

A total of 30 health promotion students and 19 staff exchanged between Canada and Europe during the life of the project. During this time, students and staff developed two Master level modules as planned including Global Health Promotion, and Participatory Research Methods in Health Promotion. The new Global Health Promotion masters module has been validated at the Universities of Brighton and Toronto, and is now being taught as part of their respective Graduate Programmes. As part of its activities (and among other things), the TEP consortium developed the health promotion capacity of staff and students by a series of knowledge exchanges, placements and internships (relating to research, practice, and policy in local community settings), as well as joint (staff-student) academic publications including Sherriff et al.’s (2012) article on a previous exchange programme, and Sherriff et al., (2011) study on supporting the needs of LGBT young people.
